Siskiyou Singers present their Spring 2025 concerts, 鈥淓arth Song,鈥 featuring music celebrating nature and admonitions to protect it.
Performances will be at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 10 and 11, at Southern Oregon University鈥檚 老夫子传媒 Recital Hall. General admission is $25 ($5 for students and Oregon Trail Card holders). Tickets are available now online or can be purchased from choir members or at 老夫子传媒 Coop or Paddington Station in Ashland in late March. Tickets are also available at the door.
The program begins with 鈥淜asar Mie la Gaji (The Earth is Tired)鈥 by Alberto Grau and 鈥淏reak, Break, Break,鈥 a Tennyson poem about lost love and set to music by choir Director Mark Reppert. The concert then strikes a hopeful note with 鈥淭he Bluebird鈥 by Charles Villiers Stanford; 鈥淥 Lovely Night鈥 by Johannes Brahms; the Renaissance madrigal 鈥淪weet Suffolk Owl鈥 by Thomas Vautor; and Eric Whitacre鈥檚 鈥淟ittle Birds.鈥 The final piece of the first half is the sunny 鈥淎way From the Roll of the Sea鈥 by Allistar MacGillvray.
The second half begins with 鈥淭he Lark In the Clear Air,鈥 an Irish folk song arranged by Andrew Carter; it is the story of a young lover who is encouraged to pursue his love by the song of the lark. Another inspiring piece is 鈥淭he Prow鈥 by the young composer Matthew Hazzard, which tells of an exhilarating day out on the wild sea. We will then travel out to the prairie with a luscious arrangement by Mark Hayes of the old, familiar 鈥淗ome on the Range鈥.
The program ends with a warning and hope. In a clever arrangement by Matt and Adam Podd, Joni Mitchell鈥檚 鈥淏ig Yellow Taxi鈥 tells us that 鈥測ou don鈥檛 know what you鈥檝e got 鈥檛il it鈥檚 gone.鈥 The final piece and namesake of the concert is 鈥淓arth Song鈥 by Frank Ticheli, who tells us, 鈥淭he scorched earth cries out in vain, O war and power you blind and blur,鈥but] through darkness and strife I鈥檒l sing!鈥
