Oregon's pandemic-EBT food assistance will help feed 430,000 children who missed out on free and reduced priced meals when schools closed.

The State of Oregon has been approved to expand the Pandemic Food Assistance program. Nearly $591 million will be used to feed about 430-thousand children through October.

Jake Sunderland is with the Oregon Department of Human Services. He said, 鈥渃urrent recipients of pandemic EBT (electronic benefits transfer) benefits will automatically receive an additional $389.00, per child, in food assistance that will be received as two payments in September and October. There鈥檚 no need to apply for this extra food assistance.鈥

Sunderland said these benefits are to make up for the meals missed due to COVID-19 school closures.

If your child has not applied-- but has qualified for free or reduced-price meals at school-- you can still receive this food assistance. Just apply online at the Oregon Department of Education by September 4th.

Public media is at a critical moment.

Recent threats to federal funding are challenging the way stations like JPR provide service to small communities in rural parts of the country.
