What does it mean to be Native American?

According to the 2000 Census, roughly four million Americans identified as Native. In 2020, that number had ballooned to nearly 10 million. But what does it mean to identify as Native? What are the criteria for tribal membership? What is the difference between ancestry and tribal membership?

These are just some of the questions author Carrie Lowry Schuettpelz addresses in her interview with Mike Green.

Carrie spent seven years working in the Obama administration on issues of homelessness and Native policy. She holds a masters degree in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
