Beware Of "Alternate Routes"

The pre-Thanksgiving storm not only blocked highways with snow, it created a sidebar problem: people looking for alternate routes. 

While it's true that the official maps often indicate "seek alternate routes," mountainous areas often do not have good alternatives.  But travelers will ask their phones and other devices to find a different way to proceed, and the devices will direct them down roads that are in even worse shape than the main roads.
