Shasta County District 2 Supervisor Leonard Moty will face a recall election scheduled for February 8, 2022.
Moty, a Republican, is one of three supervisors who were targeted in an aggressive campaign by a group of Shasta County residents. They launched the campaign Recall Shasta out of frustration that local elected officials didn鈥檛 resist state public health mandates during the pandemic.
In a statement Thursday, Moty wrote the recall group has 鈥渃ast a dark shadow over our community by spreading lies and misinformation to divide and tear us apart.鈥
The campaign was also being branded as a template to remove officials in other local jurisdictions around the country called the Red White and Blueprint. However, organizers failed to collect enough signatures in two other Shasta County districts represented by Supervisors Joe Chimenti and Mary Rickert.
Organizers with the group Recall Shasta collected 6,032 signatures, of which 4,476 were found to be valid. 4,308 signatures were needed to qualify for a recall in District 2.
Like the recent recall attempt of Gov. Gavin Newsom, residents of the second district will vote 鈥測es鈥 or 鈥渘o鈥 to a recall, and on the same ballot choose a replacement candidate. If more than 50% of residents vote yes, the recall will replace Supervisor Moty.
