As It Was: Albert G. Walling Publishes Reference Books

Pioneer Albert G. Walling was born in 1847 on the plains as his parents headed to Southwest Oregon, where they lived during the early gold rush years. Their Walling ranch in Josephine County became an important supply point for miners headed to the gold strike on Althouse Creek.

The family moved later to a homestead south of Oregon City on the banks of the Willamette River, where father and son started a nursery that became one of the largest in the region. Albert鈥檚 interest in farming led him to help form the Oregon Agricultural Society and the Oregon State Fair.

Walling moved to Portland, where he established a map-printing company and published 鈥淭he Oregon Farmer鈥 and other reference books. He created and printed lithographs of various counties in the Pacific Northwest that to the present-day are valued for their academic and artistic excellence.

In 1884 Walling published his book titled 鈥淭he History of Southern Oregon, Comprising Jackson, Josephine, Douglas, Curry and Coos Counties, Comp (iled) from the Most Authentic Sources.鈥

The history remains an important reference work.
