Map of earthquakes and aftershocks at 5 PM on Monday 12/20. The blue circle represents the 6.3 magnitude earthquake.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California yesterday afternoon. The earthquake hit about 45 miles west of Eureka at 12:10 PM and could be felt throughout Humboldt county and as far inland as Redding.

Ryan Derby is the county's Emergency Services Manager. He says people should be on the lookout for aftershocks, but that no evacuations are currently planned.

鈥淲e are monitoring the situation very closely," he says. "And if there is any threat of evacuation or tsunami we will be certain to let people know. But at this point, there is not, so standby for more information and make sure that you're receiving your emergency information from a vetted source.鈥

Multiple aftershocks have already occurred after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake. The county has been updating people via social media.

鈥淲e haven鈥檛 issued any emergency alerts for this earthquake but we have been active on social media, Derby says. 鈥淪o following the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services Facebook Page as well as our Sheriff's Office Facebook page, we will be posting updates on there.鈥

Derby says his office has heard anecdotal reports of minor damage in the Fortuna and Rio Dell areas. Anybody who has experienced damages from the earthquake should file a damage report on the Humboldt County website.
