What You Need To Know About Voter Registration

Ann McGarry

Election season is upon us, and voters are encouraged to get registered as soon as possible.

The deadline to register as a new voter in Oregon is this Tuesday, October 13. Registered voters who need to change their address or update their information can do that up until 8 p.m. Election Day, Nov. 3.

California鈥檚 deadline is next Monday, Oct. 19th. Cathy Darling Allen, the county clerk in Shasta County, says they have seen a dramatic rise in voting registration so far this year. She encourages people to register as soon as possible.

鈥淚f you know you鈥檙e going to vote, take care of it now," says Darling Allen. Go to your local election official鈥檚 office. You can register to vote and vote at the same time if that鈥檚 what you want to do. You can register online and go to the registrar鈥檚 office the next day, whatever works for you."

You can still vote after the deadline with conditional voter registration, which starts the day after the registration deadline. "It really is important for folks to know that even though we have a deadline, it doesn鈥檛 mean that you can鈥檛 vote after that,鈥 says Darling.

A benefit of getting registered early is that local elections department will send voters election information directly to them, giving people more time to understand what they'll be voting on.

Ballot drop box sites are open between 18 and 20 days before Election Day. The Oregon Secretary of State's office will release a full list of Oregon drop box locations on October 14.

People who have been displaced by wildfires can set up a temporary mailing address online or pick up their ballots at the post office.

Oregon voters have until the 28th of October to mail-in their ballot in order for it to arrive in time to be counted. After that, ballots should be put in a drop box.
